We lead every interaction with appearance first and language second. The way we compose our appearance communicates our social understanding, that is our identification and belonging to a particular subculture. Therefore, the presentation of self is imperative. We, as humans, not only groom ourselves but go further to add to and subtract from the body. Through jewelry, sculpture, body sculpture, and 2D work, I investigate the human intention to modify one’s appearance to better understand the psychological effects adornment has on the female experience.
