I am primarily interested in alphabet, symbols, and mark making as repositories of knowledge and memory. I work in a variety of media, from painting to paper cutting, from graphite to wood. I’m particularly interested in that edge between pattern and meaning, image and message, definition and abstraction. The personality of the mark grabs me, and the physicality of it. I make small editions of manuscript artist books, and some of these have been purchased by special collections in US universities. I also do flat artwork which is regularly shown in juried exhibitions around the country.
The freelance work in my studio is diverse. I have worked with book publishers to make faux-historic documents for use in novels. I have lettered on basketballs, glass ornaments, skis, and bespoke fly rods. And I have addressed invitations, filled in countless certificates, and lettered one-of-a-kind testimonials. The variety is endlessly absorbing.
